The Federal government of Nigeria through the secretary to the federation, Boss Mustapha who doubles also as the Charman of the Presidential task force (PTF) on Covid-19 has lifted the ban on religious bodies placed on Ogun, Lagos and Abuja. Two months ago, the Federal government of Nigeria through the President announced the closure of churches/ mosques and all religious gatherings in all the three states mentioned above in way to curb the virus. A taskforce was formed to implement this directive which is the PTF that reports directly to the President on the progress of their job so far.
In the midst of the rising number of Covid-19 patients which is over 10,000 as of now, the Federal government have decided to open up religious bodies with strict compliance to all given guidelines by the PTF. The decision was reached when the President was briefed on the current situation of the lockdown order compliance and implementation. The ban was lifted for 4 weeks spanning 2nd-29th June 2020 which is subject to review as the virus spread is still being monitored across the country.
Many Nigerians were happy with this recent development as they would now be allowed to go to their various worship centres like churches and mosques. Even with this good news, the resident of Ogun state are still not allowed to go to churches or mosques following the announcement by Prince Dapo Abiodun last week where he released a new guidelines for the easing of the lockdown in the state. The Governor ordered all religious bodies to remain closed while allowing free movement within the state and now made the lockdown days to be two days only (Saturday and Sunday). Curfew runs from 8pm to 6am and the ban on interstate travels is still valid in Ogun state.
Dapo took that step because of the rising case of Covid-19 patients in the state. Another reason also is the non-compliance of Ogun residents to wearing of masks and observance of the social distancing. With all the happiness folllowing the opening of churches and mosques, Ogun residents are still not allowed for now to go their church or mosques. Dapo might come out to clear the air about the opening of religious bodies in his state. But apart from that, the ban on religious bodies remains valid in Ogun state.
Do you think Dapo would shift ground owing to the Federal government directive in lifting the ban on religious bodies? Does he as the Chief Executive Officer of the state has the right to defy this federal government order? Kindly comment on this and thanks for reading through.
