Funke Akindele was arrested by the police. She spent a night at the police station and the following day, she was charged to a Lagos Magistrates Court, where she was sentenced to 14 days of community service among others.
Funke Akindele's offence was that she violated the Lagos State Coronavirus restriction orders that forbid the gathering of more than 20 persons at a time. She held a party during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown, without observing social distancing.
Despite her fame and popularity, she was treated equally before the law. The rule of law actually took its course.
On Sunday, something similar or more than what Funke Akindele did happened in Lagos, but nobody is talking about it.
The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu presented the staff of office to the new Oniru, Oba Gbolahan Lawal, who is the immediate past Lagos State Comnissioner for Agriculture. That's good news. Congratulations to him.
But, it can be seen in videos and photos that emanated from the event that there was flagrant disobedience to almost all the COVID-19 restriction orders.
From the selection process down to the time the new Oniru was installed, nothing has been done to control or reduce the crowd.
In a video, the monarch was seen dancing among a group of people, though with a face mask. But there was no observance of social distancing.
During his coronation, the hall was full. Wasiu Ayinde was performing virtually from a screen and no one will ever believe this is happening during a pandemic, when the state government said no gathering, including burial and naming ceremonies, should have more than 20 persons. Surprisingly, Sanwo-Olu himself was there without saying anything.
Later, the Lagos task force will start running after churches and mosques for violating social distancing order.
Till now, churches, mosques and schools are still under lock and key, all in the name of COVID-19 restrictions.
It is still incredible that this happened under the watch of Sanwo-Olu; moreover, the new monarch was someone in his cabinet. So, it is expected he knows better. Do we know how many people came to that event with the virus?
If Funke Akindele could be arrested for doing something similar, why are we keeping quiet over this?
It will be injustice and selective prosecution if nothing is done about this issue.
It is an aberration that that those who are supposed to lead by example are those violating the directives.
Funke Akindele was arrested, prosecuted and sentenced. Should she be the only one?
What's your view?
